Dr Richard Newton from the University of Stirling and Prof. Remigiusz Panicz, partner in the EU funded SAFE project from West Pomeranian University of Technology, participated in the “International Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference - Ways to a Circular Economy” in September 2024 in Madrid, Spain. The event was organised by EUROFISH International Organisation (Coordinator of the SAFE project) in partnership with the Spanish Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación. It was attended by around 190 participants and featured eighteen expert speakders to help participants consider issues of sustainability and resource optimization within fisheries and aquaculture.
Dr Richard Newton gave a presentation on “LCA anaysis on side-streams in the aquaculture sector”. This is a topic under investigation as part of the SAFE project, although as data collection is still in progress, the information presented was largely from previous research.
Professor Panicz gave a presentation on “Current challenges of pond aquaculture sediment and water waste streams and potential ways forward”. This was based on work within the SAFE project considering methods of trapping and utilising pond sediment as input to secondary production systems including mushrooms, watercress and duckweed.
