Can Tho Workshop on Fish Welfare in Aquaculture

The College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Can Tho University organized a workshop entitled “Fish welfare in aquaculture” in the framework of the project “Perceptions of farmed fish welfare by different stakeholders: a focus on small-scale fish farms in Mekong Delta, Vietnam” (Project C1-S2-O26), under the project “Improving the Welfare of Farmed Fish in Asia” managed by the University of Stirling and funded by Open Philanthropy. A total of 53 participants included local government aquaculture departments officers, snakehead farmers, representatives of seafood processing companies, chemical companies and feed companies, as well as students and lecturers from Can Tho University. The workshop programme is presented below:

Workshop agenda

The presentations stimulated considerable discussion since the concept of fish welfare was new to many in the audience. Fish health management on the other hand is a hot topic due to the range and prevelance of disease issues affecting farms. Overall the presentations and discussions gave all participants some useful new ideas and understanding to apply in their work or studies.
