A new grant under the Newton Institutional links Fund has just been announced for us to work in Egypt with Kafr El Sheik University, Worldfish and the Egyptian Union of Fishermen Cooperatives (EUFC). The objective of the work is to develop capacity for enhancing farmed tilapia health and welfare through using the concept of behavioural prophylaxis to improve design and management. The work will build capacity for on campus and on farm trials assessing the potential for better pond design. Published work has demonstrated how tilapias can adapt their behaviour in temperature gradients to improve survival. Europharma UK will provide training for development of bespoke test kits for monitoring pathogenic bacteria levels on farm.
