Workshop: Conservation aquaculture for wild Atlantic salmon management: understanding methods and applications, 29 August 2024
Wild Atlantic salmon populations in many areas of the UK are under threat, sparking a resurgence in interest by managers in aquaculture interventions (i.e. stocking) for conservation of stocks. Whilst many of the historical stocking programmes have been assessed as being largely ineffective, carefully targeted activities may still have a role to play in the future of salmon management. How these are selected, evaluated and practiced all require careful consideration.
The aims of this workshop were to bring together an expert group to present case studies and facilitate discussion on:
The current focus of conservation aquaculture practices in use
Decision processes governing the use of methods
Resources, expectation management and measuring success
Knowledge gaps and recommendations for research
